Revitalizing the Roma cultural heritage through scientific research and museum activities

  • The field research - which we will carry out in 35 villages in 7 counties in the south of Romania (Ialomița, Constanța, Călărași, Giurgiu, Teleorman, Olt and Dolj) - will help us to discover the heritage of the Roma minority, in order to better present and explain their identity and way of life, focusing on the vernacular architecture, traditional crafts, customs and occupations, music and dance. This research will also help to find and acquire specific movable cultural goods.
  • Based on the research, a specific household will be reconstructed in the Village Museum and the movable cultural goods will be preserved and restored by the museum's specialists.
  • Setting up an interactive space to promote Roma intangible cultural heritage and an exhibition of historical digital color photography illustrating Roma identity and cultural heritage.

Promoting the Romani cultural heritage

  • International cultural cooperation activities through Romanian-Norwegian discussion sessions to identify the economic, social and cultural aspects of Roma crafts in the current economy and society and their future prospects.
  • Organization of a temporary exhibition on Roma cultural heritage from Romania to Norway and from Norway to Romania.

Empowering the Roma population and combating discrimination

One of the key components in combating discrimination is education in the spirit of tolerance and acceptance of multicultural diversity. Through the actions of the project, we want to provide the public with the necessary tools to raise awareness of their cultural specificity and thus counter stereotypes and promote multicultural understanding. We believe that the revival of crafts is one of the main ways to empower the Roma community and to combat prejudices and negative stereotypes about them, therefore we will organize training courses for Roma, thematic workshops for students with Roma craftsmen as trainers, but also a series of sales of hand-made products by Roma craftsmen within fairs.

Activities

The project consists of several activities aimed at promoting the Romani culture, but also at creating a bridge between the general public and this historical minority.

Training courses

Organization of training courses for the Roma community, in order to introduce and develop a new vision on the art of craftsmanship as a future activity for young people.

Exhibitions

Organizarea unor expoziții în oglindă, „Romii din România în Norvegia”, respectiv „Romii din Norvegia în România” în scopul promovării patrimoniului și identității rome din cele două țări partenere

Fairs

Organizing 4 fairs, selling handmade products and performing demonstrations dedicated to the Romani cultural heritage, thus providing to Romani craftsmen with opportunities for entrepreneurial development.

Reconstruction of the Romani household in the Village Museum

An original Romani household will be restored and revitalized in the "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum.
